India’s Women’s T20 World Cup has been dealt another blow as off-spinning all-rounder Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to injury. An ankle ligament injury was sustained while playing against the Netherlands on Wednesday in Leeds, and as a result, the team management has sought to replace Patil before the tournament reaches its critical stages.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that leg-spinner Prema Rawat will take her place in the Indian squad as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil. This is Rawat’s first selection in the senior national squad for women’s cricket in India.
Shreyanka sustained this injury just after her first delivery while trying to save a ball that had gone to mid-on, and twisted her ankle when she fell to recover the ball. The Indian team physio went to the ground and assisted her off the field, where she was physically unable to support any weight on her leg, and Shreyanka was subsequently assisted off the field on a stretcher and then had scans that have confirmed that Shreyanka has sustained a significant enough injury to her ankle to be ruled out of the tournament.
Patil has had a hard time in her career dealing with injuries. She had to miss out on the T20 World Cup last time after fracturing her finger in July 2024. Then she was out for about a year with shin splints in both legs and a wrist stress reaction. The 22-year-old recently returned from being injured before making a successful comeback to competitive cricket during the 2025 Women’s Caribbean Premier League and afterwards helping Royal Challengers Bangalore win their second Women’s Premier League title in 2026.
Rawat has been called up to the World Cup squad as a result of her consistent performances in domestic and development cricket. The 24-year-old leg spinner played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in two years of Women’s Premier League and was previously selected as part of India ‘A’ for an upcoming tour to England. She had also performed well during the Rising Stars Women’s Asian Cup, taking eight wickets at an economy rate of 4.27, and helping India ‘A’ win the tournament.
So far, India has had a fantastic start to the Women’s T20 World Cup with two wins out of the two matches so far; these wins came against the Netherlands and also against Pakistan. Due to this fantastic start, they are now securely positioned with 2 wins, but they will be without Patil when they play South Africa on Sunday in Manchester, hoping to continue their perfect record.
